Books

Here are a few books I have contributed to:

The Bastard on the Couch: 27 Men Try Really Hard to Explain Their Feelings About Love, Loss, Fatherhood, and Freedom (Morrow, 2004)

The subtitle says it all. My essay “The Lock Box” was reprinted on three continents, making mine a universal complaint. Note: Bastard on the Couch is now available in paperback.

Web Sites That Work, with Roger Black (Adobe Press, 1997)

Graphic designer Black, best known for his work on Rolling Stone in the seventies, is a well-regarded website designer as well. Though most of the sites under discussion are gone, his rules of good design still

White Rabbit: A Psychedelic Reader (Chronicle Books, 1995)

My essay “On Ecstasy,” originally written for the Berkeley Monthly, found a new home here, sandwiched in between pieces by Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Oscar Wilde. Top of the world, Ma.
